The Real Nha Trang

Most tourists see Nha Trang as a beach resort town — and it is. But there's a vibrant Vietnamese city behind the hotel strip that most visitors never discover. Ancient Cham towers, a chaotic local market, island-hopping adventures, and some of the best seafood in the country await anyone willing to step off the resort grounds.

Hidden Gems

Pô Nagar Cham Towers

Built between the 7th and 12th centuries by the Cham civilization, these Hindu temples predate the Vietnamese presence in the region by hundreds of years. The main tower, dedicated to the goddess Yên Ana, is still actively worshipped — you'll see locals burning incense and leaving offerings. Visit at sunset for dramatic golden light on the ancient brickwork.

Chợ Đầm (Dam Market)

The city's main market is a sensory overload in the best way. Fresh seafood piled on ice covers the ground floor — crabs, shrimp, squid, and fish you've never seen before. The upper level has local snacks you won't find in restaurants. Try bánh căn (mini savory pancakes cooked in clay molds) and nem nướng (grilled pork sausage) from the food stalls inside.

Hòn Khô Island

A tiny island 20 minutes by boat from the mainland. No resorts, no development — just rocks, crystal-clear water, and a dramatic walking bridge connecting two islets. Bring your own snorkel gear and a picnic. This is the Nha Trang that existed before the hotels arrived.

Long Sơn Pagoda

A large white Buddha sits atop a hill overlooking the entire city. The climb — 152 steps — rewards you with panoramic views of the bay, the islands, and the mountains beyond. The pagoda complex below features beautifully ornate dragon mosaics and a peaceful garden.

Best Local Food

  • Bánh canh chả cá — Thick tapioca noodles in a rich fish cake broth. The signature dish of Nha Trang. Try it at Quán Bà Thừa on Ngô Gia Tự street.
  • Bún sứa — Jellyfish noodle soup. It sounds strange but the jellyfish has a pleasant crunch and the broth is light and refreshing. A uniquely Nha Trang experience.
  • Nem nướng Ninh Hòa — Arguably the best grilled pork spring rolls in all of Vietnam. Wrap the smoky sausage in rice paper with herbs and dip in the sweet-sour sauce.

Island Hopping Done Right

Skip the boozy "island party" tours that pack 50 tourists onto a boat with unlimited beer and loud music. Instead, hire a private boat to Hòn Mun (marine reserve with the best snorkeling), Hòn Tằm, or the Salangane bird nest islands. A private boat for 4-6 people costs about 1,500,000 VND for the full day — split between friends, it's cheaper than most tours and infinitely better.
