At 1,500 meters elevation in the Central Highlands, Dalat is Vietnam's escape from the tropical heat. French colonists built it as a hill station in the early 1900s, and their influence lingers everywhere — from the Art Deco architecture to the strawberry farms to the surprisingly good local wine. While the rest of Vietnam swelters at 35°C, Dalat sits at a comfortable 18–25°C year-round.
Vietnam is the world's second-largest coffee producer, and Dalat grows the country's best arabica beans. Skip the tourist trap "weasel coffee" — instead, visit a local roaster like La Viet Coffee where you can taste single-origin beans, learn about the production process, and buy fresh-roasted coffee to take home. The café itself is a converted warehouse with an industrial-chic vibe.
Dalat supplies flowers to the entire country. The city is surrounded by greenhouses growing roses, hydrangeas, orchids, and sunflowers. Drive through the countryside and you'll see fields of color in every direction — it's like the Netherlands, but with tropical mountains as a backdrop.
Rappel down waterfalls, cliff jump into natural pools, and zipline through the jungle canopy. Dalat Canyoning (run by certified international guides) is genuinely thrilling — not a tourist gimmick. You'll spend 4-5 hours in the jungle getting soaked, muddy, and exhilarated. One of the best adventure activities in all of Vietnam.
Every evening, the streets around Dalat Market transform into a food paradise. Must-try items:
A moderate hike (2 hours round trip) to the highest accessible peak near Dalat at 2,169 meters. On clear days, the views of the entire Central Highlands plateau are breathtaking — rolling hills, pine forests, and coffee plantations stretching to the horizon. Start early — clouds roll in by noon most days.
