How to get online in Vietnam
Data is cheap and fast in Vietnam — the only question is how you get it. Answer a few quick questions for a straight recommendation, then see the honest trade-offs of every option below.
You want to land already online and your phone supports eSIM, and it’s a shorter trip — install it before you fly and skip the airport queue.
Every option, compared
Local SIM
Buy from any phone shop in town (cheapest, needs your passport) or an airport kiosk (a little marked up). Viettel has the best rural coverage.
- Cheapest by far, with generous data allowances
- Viettel’s coverage reaches the Ha Giang loop and remote north
- A Vietnamese number for Grab, bookings, and OTPs
- Your phone must be unlocked
- You swap out your home SIM (and number)
- A few minutes of passport registration on arrival
Best for: Most travellers, long stays, and anyone going rural or riding.
eSIM
RecommendedInstall an app eSIM (Airalo, Saily, Holafly and others) before you fly; it activates the moment you land.
- Connected the second you step off the plane — no kiosk queue
- Keep your home number active alongside it
- No physical SIM to swap or lose
- Your phone must support eSIM (most recent models do)
- Pricier per GB than a local SIM
- Some plans ride a network with weaker rural coverage
Best for: Shorter trips and anyone who wants data on landing without faff.
Pocket WiFi
Reserve online and collect at the airport, or rent locally. A small battery-powered hotspot you carry.
- Shares one connection across several phones and laptops
- No SIM swap; everyone keeps their own number
- Good for a group travelling together all day
- Another device to carry and charge daily
- The daily fee adds up fast on a longer trip
- You have to return it, and you’re stuck if you split up
Best for: Families and groups sharing one connection across many devices.
Home roaming
Switch on roaming with your home carrier, or use an included travel pass if your plan has one.
- Zero setup — it just works on arrival
- Free if your home plan already includes Vietnam
- Usually the most expensive option per GB
- Often speed-throttled after a small daily cap
- Easy to rack up a surprise bill without an inclusive plan
Best for: Very short trips, or plans that already bundle Vietnam data.
