7 days in Vietnam: Hanoi, the bay, and Ninh Binh — no flights
One week is enough for one region, and the north rewards it best without a single internal flight. Hanoi is the base; the bay and Ninh Binh are short hops out and back, so the logistics stay simple and you still see the karst landscapes from water and from land.

Day by day
Days 1–2 · 2 nights
Hanoi
The capital and the north’s hub — best explored on foot and through food.
- Day 1:
Grab to the Old Quarter. Jet-lag day: a bowl of pho, a slow loop of Hoan Kiem Lake, early night.
- Day 2:
The real city: breakfast pho on a plastic stool, French Quarter walk, egg coffee, Temple of Literature, then West Lake at sunset and bun cha for dinner.
Day 3 · 1 night
Halong / Bai Tu Long Bay
A one-night karst-bay cruise — pick the quieter Bai Tu Long if you can.
- Day 3:
Hanoi → Halong Bay · Taxi / transfer · 2.5–3.5h · $12–22
Most cruises include a shuttle from Hanoi; book the cruise and the transfer comes with it.
Shuttle from Hanoi, board by noon. Lunch on deck, a kayak or swim stop, sunset on the water, sleep on board.
Day 4 · 1 night

- Day 4:
Halong Bay → Hanoi · Taxi / transfer · 2.5–3.5h · $12–22

One neighbourhood, properly: the Ba Dinh / mausoleum area (closed Mondays and Fridays), a Dong Xuan market run, or a half day at Bat Trang ceramic village.
Day 5 · 1 night
Ninh Binh
Limestone karsts and rice fields close to Hanoi — an easy, low-stress hop.
- Day 5:
Hanoi → Ninh Binh · Train · 2–2.5h · $5–10
Cheap and easy to Ninh Binh station; a great low-stress day-trip or stopover.
Train or van from Hanoi in the morning, about two hours. A rowboat along the river through the karsts is the classic first afternoon.
Day 6 · 1 night
Hanoi
The capital and the north’s hub — best explored on foot and through food.
- Day 6:
Ninh Binh → Hanoi · Train · 2–2.5h · $5–10
Cheap and easy to Ninh Binh station; a great low-stress day-trip or stopover.
Slow Hanoi: a cooking class or street-food walk, a massage, and a beer hoi corner at dusk. Skip Train Street — it’s a queue now.
Day 7
Fly home
- Day 7:
Fly home from Hanoi. A mid-afternoon flight keeps the last morning relaxed.

What this route leaves out — and why
- Ha Giang
- The loop is the north’s highlight, but cutting it to two days is worse than not doing it. With seven days it squeezes out everything else.
- Hoi An
- One flight away. Worth it on a longer trip; with seven days it costs you the bay or Ninh Binh.
The 7-day northern Vietnam trip — common questions
- Is 7 days enough for Vietnam?
- Seven days is enough for one region, not the country. Vietnam is about 1,650 km long; trying to cover north, centre and south in a week means a third of the trip in transit. Pick the north or the centre and go deep.
- How much does this 7-day northern Vietnam itinerary cost?
- Per person, two travellers sharing rooms, excluding international flights: about $293 shoestring, $619 comfortable, $1,745 premium. That covers lodging, food, local transport, activities, inter-city legs at published fares, and big one-offs like the loop or a cruise.
- When is the best time for this 7-day northern Vietnam route?
- April, September–November — when the route rates best overall, weighted by nights at each stop. Avoid July–August in Hanoi (Jul: peak heat & humidity; Aug: hot, humid, stormy); July–August in Halong / Bai Tu Long Bay (Jul: peak heat & humidity; Aug: hot, humid, stormy); July–August in Ninh Binh (Jul: peak heat & humidity; Aug: hot, humid, stormy).
- How many internal flights does this 7-day northern Vietnam route need?
- None — every leg is by road, rail or boat.
