Central Vietnam in a week: Hue, Hoi An and the Hai Van Pass
The centre is the easiest week in Vietnam: one airport, short hops, and the country’s best food town and old town an hour apart. Start in Hue for the tombs and the noodles, ride the Hai Van Pass down the coast, then let Hoi An slow everything down.

What this route leaves out — and why
- Phong Nha
- The caves are superb but sit four hours north of Hue. Add two or three nights if caves are the point.
- The DMZ tour
- A full day on a bus visiting sites that are significant but visually unremarkable — worth it only for war-history travellers.
The 7-day central Vietnam trip — common questions
- Is Hue worth visiting, or should I stay in Hoi An?
- Hue is worth two nights for the royal tombs and the food; the Imperial City itself is partly reconstructed. If you only have a few days, Hoi An alone is fine and Hue can be a long day trip over the Hai Van Pass.
- How much does this 7-day central Vietnam itinerary cost?
- Per person, two travellers sharing rooms, excluding international flights: about $196 shoestring, $442 comfortable, $1,370 premium. That covers lodging, food, local transport, activities, inter-city legs at published fares, and big one-offs like the loop or a cruise.
- When is the best time for this 7-day central Vietnam route?
- March–May — when the route rates best overall, weighted by nights at each stop. Avoid October–November in Hue (Oct: flood season begins; Nov: peak flooding & typhoons); October–November in Hoi An (Oct: flood season begins; Nov: peak flooding & typhoons).
- How many internal flights does this 7-day central Vietnam route need?
- None — every leg is by road, rail or boat.
